Selected topic

The topic that I have chosen for the New Yorker project is love. I chose this topic because out of all the topics that we have been over this year, its the one that I feel like I most understand. For example, the Romeo and Juliet directors notebook was a project where I felt like I knew what I was doing because of the unit. Also, while writing my essay for A Separate Peace, It seemed easier to write versus the ones in the past. The topic of love is relatable and interesting to me.

Act 4 Connection

This movie clip out of “The Hunger Games” shows the scene when the reaping took place. Katniss knows that her little sister, Prim, is very scared to go to the reaping because since she just turned twelve she could have a chance of being chosen to be in the hunger games. The odds aren't in Prim’s favor, and she is called as the tribute for district 12. People are allowed to volunteer for others, but it has never happened because of how scared everyone is of being put into the games. Katniss is the first person to ever volunteer. Panicking, she starts screaming that she volunteers as tribute right as Prim is called. She didn't want her innocent little sister to have to go into the arena, and she would rather have herself be killed than Prim.  

People will risk their own lives in the name of love as shown through Katniss risking her life for Prim. When Prim's name is called as tribute Katniss gets very upset screams “I volunteer! I volunteer!” (Katniss). This shows that Katniss is willing to risk her own life if it means helping to save her sister’s. Katniss knows that she probably has a greater chance to make it out alive than Prim does, and she was willing to take the risk. She couldn't stand the thought of Prim going into the Hunger Games, because she loved her too much, so she volunteered for her and saved her from being put into the arena. In addition, after Katniss volunteers, Prim starts screaming “No” until she is dragged away by Gale. This shows that Prim doesn't want Katniss to  take her place because she doesn't want to lose Katniss either. 

Soliloquy and Wordle

Shakespeare is trying to teach us how love can make you do crazy things, and this soliloquy teaches this by showing how Juliet is willing to fake her death for Romeo. 

Parent Conflict

When I was in sixth grade my mom signed me up for a swim team that i didn't want to do. After telling her that i didn't want to do it she said that she wanted me to give it a try. I went to a few of the practices and still knew that it wasn't something that i wanted to do since i didn't know anyone there. It was also three days a week and I felt like I didn't have time to do anything else after school. I tried to get her to let me quit but she told me that I at least had to finish the session since she had paid for it and I was part of a team. Once the session ended though she didn't make me do it again.

Decisions

Based on Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, love causes people to make decisions. For example, when Romeo is talking to Friar Lawrence about how he now loves Juliet instead of Roseline, he says, “We met, we wooed and made exchange of vow, I’ll tell thee as we pass, but this I pray, That thou consent to marry us today” (2.3.62.66-68). This shows that Romeo is acting upon love because of how fast the entire process has been. He met Juliet and then decided that he wanted to marry her. Even though they haven't known each other for very long, his strong love for her urged him to make a decision to ask Friar Lawrence to marry them. In addition, when Tybalt is trying to get Romeo to fight with him on the streets, Romeo says,“But love thee better than thou canst devise, Till thou shalt know the reason of my love. And so, good Capulet, which name I tender as dearly as my own, be satisfied” (3.1.71-73). Romeo is not letting himself fight with Tybalt because now that he is secretly married to Juliet, he wants to family feud to end. He knows that the only way they will be able to be together is if they have their families approval, so he doesn't want to start any more fighting. This shows that love causes people to make decisions because Romeo is deciding not to fight Tybalt based on how much love he has for Juliet and how much he wants to be with her.

Mostly every decision one makes in life can impact someone else's life, whether its for better or for worse. For example, Romeo deciding not to fight Tybalt at first negatively impacted Mercutio because it made him feel like since Romeo wasn't going to defend himself, he should instead. This resulted in Mercutio getting killed. Even though Romeo was making the right decision by trying to keep the peace, it may have ended differently for Mercutio if Romeo had chosen to act in a different way. Also, when Romeo made the decision to kill Tybalt, he made an impact in someone else’s life. Tybalt was Juliet’s cousin and when Romeo killed him Juliet had a moment where she was skeptical about the love she shared with Romeo.

The song "Explosions", by Ellie Goulding shows how sometimes love can be a scary thing, and how it can bring pain that can feel very intense and real. The lyrics from the chorus are probably the most meaningful lyrics in the song.“Explosions, on the day you wake up needing somebody, and you’ve learned, it’s ok to be afraid. But it will never be the same.” These “explosions” are referring to an awakening, when whoever broke her heart realizes that they cannot live without her. Finally then the person will realize that whatever caused him to run away during the relationship wasn't worth ending things over. Throughout this entire song one can learn that in some cases, love can be a very selfish thing and can often seem unclear. “Explosions” depicts love in a negative way. When she sings this song she is reflecting on the memory of an old relationship that she had, where she gave everything to someone who left her when things got to real for them to handle.
