If I won the lottery...

If my family won a large amount of money from the lottery I would feel incredibly grateful. Even though I would feel grateful, I might also feel guilty to have won so much money purely from luck. My family would definitely put away enough money to pay for my siblings and I to go to college, and probably some money for each of us to start out with after we graduate from college too. In addition I'd hope that we would donate a good portion of the money to charities. I'm sure that my family would also spend some of the money also on things we want, but don't necessarily need, like a new car.

The conflicts that would arise with this sudden great fortune may take a toll on the relationships with my family members and others. It would be hard to know who to trust, because I wouldn't know if someone was just trying to get close to me in hopes of getting some of the money. Hopefully the wealth wouldn't damage true friendships and things would continue to stay normal. I would also feel like I was almost obligated to give some of the money to friends and family, for example if they were in debt. If my family were to help out someone with money issues, then it would be hard to say no to the next person who asked. I'm sure that winning the lottery would most likely do more bad than good to relationships with my family and others.

Why did Steinbeck end the book the way he did?

Steinbeck ended the book the way he did because he is showing that not all dreams come true, and that there are many other factors that contribute to making your dreams come true.

Why is it important to have dreams?

Dreams are one of the most important aspects of life. If one doesn't have dreams then there would be no goals to be set and nothing to achieve or work for. In the novella "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck,  George and Lennie's dream is to one day own their own ranch. For instance, when Lennie and George are sitting in the house planning their future George says, "we'd have our own place where we belonged and not sleep in no bunk house" (57). Lennie and George both share this dream and they are trying to save up the money to buy land where they can finally live the life that they have always pictured for themselves. They want to have a place for themselves where they can be stable and won't have to move around a lot. In addition, when George and Lennie become deeper invested in talking about their future home George says, "An' it'd be our own, an' nobody could can us" (58). This shows that George is anxious to have their own place where Lennie can stay out of trouble and where they wont have to work for anyone anymore. They have these dreams for themselves and they are working hard to achieve them. A life without dreams would have no purpose and it would be very unsuccessful.

In the novella "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck, George and Lennie's relationship is very emotionally straining for both characters. George is very short tempered with Lennie and controlling of him. For instance when they are walking George says, "Might jus' as well spen' all my time tellin' you things and then you forget 'em and I tell you again" (5). He says this to Lennie because Lennie keeps on forgetting where they are going. George looks down on Lennie very much and acts like he doesn't want him around and that he is just a burden to him. It is obvious though at some points that George does care for Lennie, so therefore their relationship isn't completely toxic. However he doesn't ever bother to spare his feelings which keeps on straining their friendship. In addition, George also says to Lennie, "I could get along so easy and so nice if I didn't have you on my tail. I could live so easy and maybe have a girl" (7). George makes Lennie feel very unwanted and not important. He acts like he can say whatever he wants to Lennie since Lennie isn't very smart and he mostly just forgets about everything a few minutes later. The relationship that George and Lennie have is strained because George is very short-tempered with Lennie and doesn't care about his feelings.

Conclusion

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is emotional, addictive, and it teaches life lessons which makes it a perfect book for a freshman to read. Throughout this book the reader can become very invested in the lives of the characters and with the way that its written, the characters seem real. Some of the topics in The Fault in Our Stars can be relatable to other teenagers, and this makes the book more interesting for teens to read. The life lessons in this story are also very raw and they make a freshman want to maximize their potential and be a better person.

M- A freshman is high school should read this book because it is very emotional and heavy read.

E- It is emotional because it demonstrates how Hazel’s amazing strength helps keep her going on with her life and with the way she speaks she becomes a really likeable character.

A – It makes one feel like they’ve become attached to the characters and invested in their lives.

E- Hazel and Augustus’s love is unlike other teenage relationships and they have a passion that you don’t see very often. They are struggling together and are each other’s support.

A- Most teenagers are worrying about non-important things compared to what Hazel and Augustus’s have to deal with.

T- This is a good book for a freshman because it introduces one to topics that they may have never thought about before.

Paragraph #2

M- Throughout the entire book there is an abundance of life lessons and therefore a freshman should read it.

E- Just with the way that Augustus and Hazel speak you can tell they’re strong people. The words they say are very raw and inspiring and they don’t take any shortcuts to get to the truth.

A- It makes you want to do better and be better. Augustus and Hazel have been through more than most people have in a lifetime and they show it in the things that they say.

E- In the quote, “If you don’t live a life in service of a greater good, you’ve gotta at least die a death in service of a greater good.”, this is a life lesson. Quotes like these are all throughout the book and they are quotes that grab one’s attention and interest the reader.

A- Many of the life lessons sound hopeful and almost shed a glimpse of light on a very dark situation.

T- Freshmen should read this book because not only are the life lessons compelling, they are also informative.

M- This book should be read by a freshman because it is a page turner and always leaves one wanting to keep reading and find out what happens next.

E- There are many unexpected plot twists as the story unfolds.

A- As the book keeps going the plot gets stronger and keeps the reader deeply engaged.

E- Most of the chapters leave off at a cliff hanger.

A- As the reader finishes a chapter they feel compelled to read more.

T- Freshmen would find this book interesting due to the authors skills in plot development.

Introduction and Thesis Statement

Sometimes in life you cant choose the position that you're put in, you just have to deal with it the best that you can. Thats what Hazel Grace is doing in the book The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. Hazel is fighting for her life against this awful thing called cancer. Not that she has any hope of winning, the cancer is incurable. But she just cant leave without knowing that she put up a fight. As if that isnt enough for her to deal with everything changes when her boyfriend August's cancer comes back. This is a book that I would recommend to a high school student because its emotional, it teaches life lessons, and it leaves you always wanting more.

What do humans need in order to live a fulfilling life?

In order to live a fulfilling life humans need to have confidence in themselves. If you don't have confidence in yourself then it would be hard to let yourself meet new people. Support from you're family and friends is also needed to live a fulfilling life. You should always have people to fall back on when you need help or want someone to talk to. Humans also need goals and things to work for. If there is nothing to work for in your life then your standard would begin to be set really low and it would be hard to feel proud of yourself. The last thing that humans need to live a fulfilling life is perspective. This means that you appreciate the things that you have and you learn from you're bad experiences without getting down on yourself.
